Minerva

I have always been enchanted with Greek and Roman mythology. The subject in this mid relief - cameo is Minerva the Roman Goddess. This goddess of wisdom and patron of arts, trade, and the art of war, was born fully armed from the head of Jupiter.

Seasons

The first of my multi-sculptures. Each of the four sides represents a season of the year. I was fortunate to locate a stone who’s colors and patterns made my endeavor easy.

Virtues 2003

During the Neo-Classical period of sculpture (late 1800’s to the early 1900’s) a favored subject matter was 3 female figures representing the cardinal virtues. During these troubling times I endeavored to set a mood for reflection on what those virtues have come to mean.
Thank you to Olie and John of the Champlain Marble Quarry for providing these very rare and beautiful stones.

Majestic Flight

An example of the stone dictating its final form. This spotted gray marble cried out to become a spotted dolphin. If you are familiar with my tile series you will recognize it from the studies executed there. Laminating 3 stone slabs together created the green and white base.

Tern

I am fortunate to live by the sea and I spend quite a few hours watching terns swooping past as the search for food. This carving is quite delicate.

Reflections

Reflections is meant to bring to mind the joy children experience on the morning of a new snow. Schools are closed and there is all that playing to do.

Americana

A different approach to our national symbol. I posed the wings to bring to mind a victorious championship runner.

Midnight Descent

It seemed after the events in Iraq during early 2004 it was time for an updated treatment of my Americana carving. A bolder, more aggressive and stronger treatment.

Family

Family draws heavily on a combination of complex symbols:
The Double Helix for humanity
The Egyptian Ankh means life. (The Ankh is defined as: The symbolic representation of both Physical and Eternal life. It is known as the original cross, which is a powerful symbol that was first created by Africans in Ancient Egypt.)
The folded Infinity Symbol for continuity and complexity of the relationship.
The (quasi) Mobius Strip to show how family relationships intertwine.
The vertical orientation to lift you up.
The altered perspective (thinner at the top) to create a larger space
Each loop represents a family member with the father on the bottom providing support and the mother on top holding the whole together.
Inspiration was from Japanese sculptors who produce interconnected rings and links to represent family.

Kalina

During a week at Quarry Camp on Isle LaMotte Vermont a fellow sculptor carved a Killer Whale for his son. Seeking to build on his efforts I carved this highly figured block of Champlain Black Marble and mounted it on a rough green and white boulder. Aphrodite Y2K

Aphrodite was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She has been carved numerous times over the centuries but the present time ideal beauty is quite a bit different. This is a concept of what Aphrodite’s torso might look like today.

Nectar

This is the most delicate piece I have ever carved. The effect of the thinness of the wings and the translucent nature of the stone leads you to believe you are looking at colored crystal and not a carved stone. I will confess that my heart was in my throat for much of the work.
